Hi! We're GuideStar.

For restaurants, there’s Yelp. For real estate, there’s Zillow. For law, there’s LexisNexis. For nonprofits, there’s GuideStar.

Better Data. Better Decisions. Better World.

Each year, millions of people use GuideStar information to make decisions about nonprofits and the work they do. Donors explore charities and issues they want to support. Nonprofit leaders benchmark their organizations against their peers. Funders research grantees. We strive to provide the highest-quality, most complete nonprofit information available.

What We Do

GuideStar gathers, organizes, and distributes information about U.S nonprofits. It sounds simple, but in reality it’s an enormous undertaking. The nonprofit sector is huge and complex, as these numbers from our database show:

We obtain data from public sources, other organizations that promote philanthropy, and the nonprofits themselves. We then aggregate it into GuideStar Nonprofit Profiles, one profile for each organization in our database. Every nonprofit on our site is invited to update its profile. There’s no charge to update.

Users obtain this information through our website, our products, and more than 200 sites and applications that incorporate our data. We’re proud of the reputation we’re earned for the quality, breadth, and depth of our data, and we work every day to maintain and enhance these characteristics.

Last year, more than 9 million people visited www.guidestar.org. Millions more accessed GuideStar data through AmazonSmile, Facebook, Network for Good, major donor-advised funds, and more than 200 other partner sites and applications.

Our mission is to revolutionize philanthropy by providing information that advances transparency, enables users to make better decisions, and encourages charitable giving.

People & Places

Our team of more than 80 works together from locations across the United States (and one teammate in Japan: hi, Sarah!). Our three offices are located in Williamsburg, Virginia; Washington, D.C.; and Oakland, California. We strive for a culture that is in touch with the work that nonprofits do, and encourage each other to be involved in volunteering in our communities.

Our Role as a Nonprofit

GuideStar was a pioneer in using the Internet to share nonprofit information. (Fun fact: in the early days, GuideStar data was distributed on CD-ROM.) Today we are part of the backbone of the nonprofit sector. Yet we also continue to innovate, collaborating with other leadership organizations on issues such as the Overhead Myth and diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI).
