Tips for Writing Nonprofit Reviews on GuideStar

GuideStar has partnered with GreatNonprofits to give you the forum to talk about great—and perhaps not yet great—nonprofits on its site. If you have had direct experience with a nonprofit, GuideStar would like to encourage you to write a review, which will be posted on the organization's report.

How to Write a Review

  1. Search the database for the organization you want to review. If you are a GuideStar Premium subscriber, you'll need to sign out first.

  2. Click the Write a Review link in that organization's listing in the search results.

    Click the Write Reviews tab that appears in the left column of every page of the organization's report.

  3. Fill in and submit the review form.

It's that easy.

Helpful Hints

  • The most helpful reviews are those that speak from your personal experience. How did you come to know this nonprofit? Did you get the services or programs you were expecting? What results have you seen from this nonprofit?

  • Be as detailed as possible in your review. Give concrete examples.

  • Ask yourself, "What does the reader need to know about this nonprofit?"

  • Decide on the overall point you want to get across to the reader.

  • Use a friendly, relaxed writing style.

  • Do not include anything in your review that:

    • is false or intentionally misleading;

    • is patently offensive to users of the GuideStar site, such as content or messages that promotes racism, bigotry, hatred or physical harm of any kind against any group or individual;

    • harasses or advocates harassment of another person;

    • involves the transmission of unsolicited mass mailing or “spamming”;

    • promotes illegal activities or conduct that is abusive;

    • is threatening, obscene, defamatory or libelous;

    • is pornographic or sexually explicit in nature; and

    • seeks or recommends providers of material that exploits people under the age of 18 in a sexual or violent manner.

  • At the end of your review, sum up your experiences and thoughts on the nonprofit.

  • Be sure to read and edit your review before you post it.
