GuideStar Adds New Disclosure Tool to Its Suite of Nonprofit Services

Release date: June 29, 2005

Williamsburg, Va., and Washington, D.C.—GuideStar, the public charity that connects people to nonprofit information, has launched eDocs, a new service that helps nonprofits make important documents available to the public.

Now, any of the more than 1.5 million exempt organizations in the GuideStar database can use eDocs to post its letter of determination, audited financial statements, annual reports, and other official documents to the GuideStar Web site, www.guidestar.org. Nonprofits can also upload their Forms 990 as soon as they submit them to the IRS. These are often the documents that grantmakers and others performing due diligence want to see.

eDocs is the latest service GuideStar offers to promote nonprofit transparency and the public's access to nonprofit information. For nearly a decade, GuideStar has encouraged charitable organizations to add information about their programs and operations to the GuideStar database. GuideStar also makes the three most recent Forms 990 it receives from the IRS for any organization available to all registered users.

"We are proud to offer nonprofits an additional way to embrace transparency and accountability and to give the public more information on all of the nation's exempt organizations," stated Robert G. Ottenhoff, GuideStar's president and CEO. "Nonprofits are eager to share their information; more than 95,000 organizations have added their data to GuideStar. The public is eager to see this information; last year, users made 5.3 million-plus visits to our Web site to learn more about nonprofit organizations and their activities. Through eDocs, nonprofits can make even more data available. We believe that voluntary disclosure and access to nonprofit information are the most effective ways we have to increase the public's trust in the nonprofit sector."
