Washington, D.C., and Williamsburg, Va.—GuideStar USA, Inc., the leading source of nonprofit information, and KIMBIA, a group that empowers nonprofits and other organizations to increase giving, are hosting a $5,000 giveaway for nonprofits across the nation in order to encourage them to seek reviews from donors, volunteers, and other supporters. User-generated reviews provide donors with opinions from those who have firsthand experience with individual nonprofits.
The giveaway begins on February 1, 2011, and ends at 11:59 p.m. EDT, February 28, 2011. All U.S. 501(c)(3) public charities are eligible to enter. The organization that has received the most number of reviews on www.guidestar.org or www.greatnonprofits.orgduring this time period will win a grand prize of $5,000. GuideStar will determine the winner on or around March 7, 2011, and will notify the organization within 30 days of the decision. The winner will be featured on the GuideStar Web site and announced in an issue of the newsletter.

Reviews enable nonprofits to show donors and other stakeholders that they are making an impact in their communities, are effectively working toward their missions, and are benefitting the people with whom they have interacted. As a result, this organization was able to raise an extra $3,000 in its year-end campaign from donors, despite the difficult economic climate; it attributed this support to the reviews. Now, the group is incorporating quotes from the reviews in its new brochure and other marketing materials. Several other organizations have reported similar success.
